Shri. U A SUBRAMANIAN

Education

  • M E, Aerospace Engineering (IISc. Bangalore)
  • B Tech., Mechanical engineering (Govt. Engineering College, Trichur, University of Calicut)

Course Offered

  • Design of Aerospace Mechanisms(PG/UG Elective)

Experience

  • 37 years of experience in VSSC/ISRO in the area of design, analysis, development, testing and integration of Aerospace Mechanisms.
  • 8 years of experience as Division Head, Staging Systems & Mechanisms Division in VSSC, responsible for the design, analysis, development, tesing and integration of Stage Separation Systems and Deployment Mechanisms.
  • 5 years of experience as Group Director, AeroSapce Mechanisms Group in VSSC, responsible for the design, development, tesing & integration of of Space Vehicle mechanisms for Launch Vehicles, Satellites, Reentry & Landing Modules.

Conceived, designed & developed many critical aerospace mechanical systems and mechanisms and successfully inducted in ISRO's operational launch vehicles PSLV, GSLV, and LVM3. A few among them are listed down:

  • Thrust Phase Simulation Test Facility: To impart 3g acceleration for a payload of 4000Kg over a travel of 1200mm.
  • Re-engageable LHRS, a fully testable hydraulic system developed for GSLV which can release, reengage, and apply clamping load onto the vehicle remotely through ALS.
  • A multipoint separation system for the GSLV Cryogenic stage which takes care of the thermal deflections of the LOX tank.
  • Satellite Separation System with Tension Reduction Device for LVM3.
  • Low Shock nano & small satellite dispensing systems using non-pyro mechanisms in PSLV & SSLV.
  • Air intake Cowl Opening Mechanism for the Scramjet Engine in air-breathing propulsion flown in ATV 01.

Worked as the vital team leader for the development of ChaSTE payload mechanism for Chandrayaan 2 & 3, which conducted experiments on moon’s surface for evaluating the thermal behaviour of lunar regolith.

Guided various design teams for the development of many versatile mechanisms & separation systems for Gaganyaan Program including parachute based Crew Module Deceleration System. All of them are successfully functioned in the maiden flight of TVD1.

Played a lead role in developing many innovative mechanical systems & mechanisms and inducting them into ISROs developmental flights of RLV, Air Breathing Engines, Test Vehicle, SSLV, Semi Cryo etc.

Brought out many novel concepts and developed it into new products for inducting into space program. Pneumatic stage separation system, 5 DOF multifunctional manipulator, aero decelerator deployment mechanism, Motorized clamp band system, Gas strut based jettisoning system etc.

Fostered expertise in multidisciplinary areas including mechanical systems engineering; design, analysis & development of aerospace systems and mechanisms; outsourcing & system realization through industries; assembly - integration and performance evaluation through instrumentation & testing; and project management.

Led the following Design Review Committees as the chair/alternate chair:

  • Launch Vehicle Design review Committee for Mechanical Integration.
  • Launch Vehicle Design Review Committee for Stage Auxiliary Systems.
  • Failure Analysis Board- Mechanical & Chemical Systems.
  • PRA Committee for Gaganyaan Stage Auxiliary Systems.
  • Centre Level Connector Specialist Committee.
  • Expert Committee for Trisonic Wind Tunnel Hydraulic Systems.
  • Expert Committee to interact with Korean Team for Lunar Rover.
  • Inter-Centre team for Planetary Rock Sampling.

Held the following Techno managerial responsibilities:

  • Deputy Project Director for GSLV (Stage Auxilary Systems)
  • Deputy Project Director for Human Space Flight Project(Mechanisms & Separation Systems)
  • Deputy Project Director for RLV TD (Separation Systems).
  • Deputy Project Director for Chandrayaan- 2 (Payload deployment mechanisms)
  • Payload Director for ChaSTE Payload, Chandrayaan-2
